There will be shuttles leaving from the finish area starting around 6 AM. Since this is a point to point race, the easiest thing to do is to leave your car at the finish line and catch a shuttle ride to the start! The last shuttles will leave for the start line around 6:45 am.
There are a few parking spots at Whistle Punk Trailhead but parking is limited. Also, parking here requires a NW Forest Pass.
FOR RUNNERS SCOUTING COURSE PRIOR TO RACE DAY:
I highly recommend downloading the free app "Halfmile PCT" on your phone. This app, meticulously created with GPS by a previous thru-hiker (named Halfmile) will direct you back onto the PCT if you've gotten off of it. It tells you both how to get to the PCT by trail and also points you there "as the crow flies." It works even on airplane mode! This section of the PCT is pretty well traveled and marked but nice to have this back up.
Directions to Finish line/Morning Shuttle meeting spot:
From Portland take I-84 E to Cascade Locks exit 44, take the Bridge of the Gods (toll $2) across the Columbia River to Hwy 14, turn left(west) on Hwy 14 to City of North Bonneville, mile post ~39. There is a large parking lot, gas station, and park/playground area. Look for people with impressive calves holding water bottles.
From Vancouver/I-5 or 205 S take Hwy 14 E. to City of North Bonneville, mile post ~39. If you reach Bridge of the Gods, you’ve gone too far.
Directions to Whistle Punk Trailhead/ Start line: (but unless you are getting dropped off, it's better to take the shuttle!)
From Portland or Vancouver go east on I-84 or Hwy 14 respectively. From I-84 take exit 44, cross the Bridge of the Gods (toll $2) into Washington. Go east on Hwy 14 through the town of Stevenson and get off of the 14 at the sign for Carson on Wind River Hwy (or Hot Springs Avenue - they merge). Go north, through the town of Carson. Proceed 8.6 miles to the Community of Stabler and take a left onto Hemlock road, soon after the Stabler sign. Drive 1.5 miles to the Ranger station and take a right onto the 43 road (not a good sign marking this road but take the right just after the ranger station and before the bridge crossing). Proceed on the paved road about a half mile to FR 417 (another very small sign! it's a packed gravel road on the right hand side) . Whistle Punk Trailhead is at the end of FR 417- there are some pit toilets and a handful of parking spots.
Runners will run a short loop around Whistle Punk trail before connecting onto the Pacific Crest Trail.
Travelers from the East should take Hood River Bridge ($2 toll) to Hwy 14 and head west to the start or the finish.
